Job Title: Assistant Head of Year

Location: Northampton

Salary: Grade G, Points 8 – 13 (£25,992 - £28,163 FTE)

Reports to: Head of Year

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Assistant Head of Year to join our pastoral team. This role plays a vital part in supporting the overall achievement, welfare, and development of students by working closely with the Head of Year, teaching staff, and other pastoral professionals. You will help create a positive learning culture, ensuring high standards of behaviour, attendance, and punctuality.

Key Responsibilities

Promote a culture of high expectations, ambition, and self-esteem among students.

Maintain a visible presence during lessons, assemblies, and unstructured times to encourage punctuality and a calm environment.

Manage and support student behaviour, including implementing sanctions and restorative approaches.

Provide 1:1 or small group mentoring to support individual student needs.

Build positive, collaborative relationships with parents and carers to support student engagement.

Keep accurate records and update school systems regularly.

Assist in organising and supporting year group events.

Participate in meetings, training, and supervisory duties as required.

Support a high-quality pastoral structure ensuring every student can thrive.

Candidate Profile

Essential:

Good English and Maths skills (minimum GCSE Grade 3 or equivalent).

Strong understanding of behaviour management policies and safeguarding.

Experience working with children or a willingness to develop this through training.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage with students, staff, and parents effectively.

Organised, calm under pressure, and able to manage competing priorities.

Desirable:

Previous experience in a similar pastoral role or school environment.

Experience mentoring young people and liaising with parents.
