This absolutely gorgeous and in Fabulous condition Antique Chesterfield 2 Seater Sofa is very unique and with character!
Filled with horse hair as a padding proves its Antique value.
Horse hair fabric has unique qualities. It is a protein fibre, durable and strong. The fact that 100 year old chairs can be stripped, the hair cleaned and reused speaks volumes. The hair fibres do not flatten though, in upholstery, the whole seat pads will as the hairs knit closer together.
With the advent of “synthetic chemistry technology,” horsehair went out of fashion as a filler for most furniture, experienced reupholstering master noted, and by the mid-1940s it was rarely used except in custom upholstery shops. Today, new horsehair — which is harvested from small horses or ponies “that have extremely long manes” with no pain to the animal, according to experienced upholsterer is very expensive.
