About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Safety Engineer with expertise in Programmable Elements to contribute to the development of advanced systems for next–generation defence platforms.

You will join a multidisciplinary team responsible for ensuring the safety and compliance of integrated systems critical to platform capability and survivability.

As a key technical contributor, you will lead and support activities that underpin the system safety case, focusing on programmable technologies embedded within the wider combat system. The role will require engagement across teams, suppliers, and stakeholders to ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Lead safety engineering tasks such as Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Safety Assessments (PSSA/SSA)

Analyse causes of programmable system failures, including systematic and common–cause failures

Define, manage, and monitor safety requirements in line with technical and contractual obligations

Support hazard identification workshops and safety committee meetings

Evaluate and integrate Commercial Off–The–Shelf (COTS) solutions

Liaise with suppliers to gather and review safety evidence in compliance with Def Stan 00–055

Contribute to project reviews by reporting on safety engineering progress

Drive continuous improvement within the existing Safety Management System

About You

Essential Skills & Experience

Proven experience in safety engineering for systems involving programmable elements

Competent in performing safety assessments (FTA, SIL allocation, PSSA/SSA)

Familiarity with relevant defence standards (Def Stan 00–055, 00–056)

Knowledge of IEC/BS EN 61508 and application in high–integrity software systems

Understanding of Software Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) and/or Design Assurance Levels (DAL)

Desirable

Degree in engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience

Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards it
