Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!
We got this from a brocante in Reims, Champagne, and have been using it as a focal point urn planter on a terrace.
However, this is an antique confit pot or salting jar that apparently originally came from a small holding.
It was probably used as a confit pot for preserving duck in duck fat but they were also used as salting jars to cure or preserve foods in salt.
Hand thrown, salt glazed with both handles intact, which is unusual for one this age, and dating to the early 20th century (1900s) it makes a great decorative rustic antique, both in the garden or inside.
A big item that is now worn but very sound, it is functional as intended or has a number of modern day uses such as a planter, garden focal point, vase, kitchen utensils jar etc…
In very good, sound, antique condition with wear and staining consistent with age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
An attractive curved, pot bellied, urn shape that stands well.
The surfaces are mostly glazed.
They are hand thrown and attractively irregular with bumps and dents - see photos.
There is wear and a few firing imperfections giving the whole an attractive rustic patina - see photos.
No cracks or damage but there are several small chips - see photos.
The handles are present, slightly irregular in shape, and in good sound condition which is unusual for a jug of this age.
They are easily strong enough to lift the jar even when filled.
The bottom has wear from use but is sound.
I have filled this with water and it appears to be watertight.
I can find no maker’s mark but there are a couple of imprinted numbers to the upper left of one side tag I read as a 1 and 0 - see photos.
Measures approximately:
47 cm tall,
34 cm long handle to handle,
28 cm diameter at it’s widest, 26 cm at the top, 20 cm top opening,
weighs about 7.8 kg.
