Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!
Currently used as an interior planter, this is a beautiful antique French cuivre or copper wash tub planter that has developed an impressive weathered patina to its surfaces.
Acquired from a brocante at Reims in the Champagne region, it had apparently been recovered from the clearance of a tannery, hence the attractive verdigris staining.
Hand made but I can’t work out if it was originally scratch built or it has had numerous running repairs over the years. The bottom is a replacement/repair with copper rivets and the handles are soldered with a reinforced plate to the inside.
It does have an attractive original cramp seam to one side which is quite regular in cut and dates it to the early 1900s, maybe late 1800s (A cramp seam is the join of the sheets of copper where it is sort of dovetailed together).
An imposing piece showing a great patina, but no longer watertight, it now makes a fantastic planter, log bucket, or just a grand focal point…
In good sound condition with staining, wear, scratches, dents, holes and knocks consistent with its age and use - please examine photos carefully for condition.
This has latterly been used as an interior planter and has had a coat of clear wax to enhance the verdigris patina but if to be used outside the patina would naturally continue to develop. I’m also sure the copper would polish up well if so desired.
Solid and sound with no structural damage but there are a couple of holes so it’s not watertight.
NOTE: there is a small hole to the bottom. The lower edges, where they are folded and riveted in place, are split a little and leak at points - see photos. That said they do provide good drainage.
The copper is quite thick and strong but there are many dents, scratches, and knocks - see photos.
NOTE: The upper edge is sound and reinforced by a rusted iron support on its underside but the iron has split away in one place so flexes just a little - see photos.
The edge is rolled copper with a couple splits but secure.
The iron handles are worn and rusted but secure and easily strong enough to lift the tub by when full.
The base is worn but sound.
Stands well.
Nicely aged with a good verdigris coating.
The interior is in similar condition.
I can find no maker’s mark.
Approximate dimensions:
47 cm diameter to the top outside edge,
55 cm long, handle to handle,
44 cm tall,
Weighs about 6.2 kg.
