When Porsche unveiled the 944 in 1982, it marked a turning point for the brand’s transaxle sports cars. Building on the success of the Porsche 924, the 944 was designed to deliver stronger performance, sharper handling, and a more refined driving experience—qualities that helped cement its reputation as one of the most well-balanced sports cars of the 1980s.

Introduced as the successor to the 924, which had been criticised for its use of Audi-sourced engines, Porsche developed a new in-house 2.5-L inline-four engine, effectively half of the 928’s V8, and one of the smoothest large-capacity fours of its time thanks to counter-rotating balance shafts; offering 160 bhp, driven through a 5-speed manual transmission, these would get you to 60mph in around 8 seconds – a strong performer in 1982!

While the rear-engined 911 remained the company’s icon, the 944 carved out its own reputation as a well-balanced, stylish, and usable sports car.

More important than outright speed was the handling, thanks to its front-engine, rear-transaxle layout, the 944 enjoyed near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution. This balance, combined with precise steering and strong brakes, made it one of the best-handling sports cars of its day, but arguably of the 944’s strongest selling points was its usability.

The cabin blended sports car ergonomics with surprising comfort, making the 944 a true daily-driver Porsche and unlike the 911 of the same era, it had a practical hatchback boot, more comfortable seating along with good visibility and reliability for long-distance driving; making this a sports car you could realistically use every day — something Porsche advertised heavily at the time.

Following a period in storage this super example has recently undergone basic recommissioning to ensure it runs, drives and stops. On inspection it started on the key and idled upto temperature well with no apparent issues, we would always recommend a thorough service and inspection of key components, such as cambelt, before returning to the road for regular use. The odometer shows 13,898; presumably 113,898 – a very respectable mileage for a 944 and the condition supports our suspicion that this has been a well maintained and properly looked after car. Well spec’d from new its fitted with optional electric windows, air conditioning and a removable sunroof. We did test electrical functions and found the pop-up headlamps to be non-operational.

It presents well all round, please see photos and walkaround video on YouTube [Website URL removed] for a close look, we think a thorough service, a good clean and few additions such as wheel caps will see this back on the road and in super condition.

The file includes the original service/handbook with earlier history and the HPI report is clear, showing a colour change in 1988 from blue to green; although given the actual colour this could have simply been a DVLA correction. The V5 has been applied for and the owner is hopeful it will arrive by the end of auction, otherwise it will be forwarded on.

The 944 is a classic with a growing appreciation and whilst for years it was overshadowed by the 911, enthusiasts have come to value its balance, engineering, and usability; with prices remaining relatively accessible compared to 911s of the same era we think the 944 is one of the best-value classic Porsches available today. Capturing the best of Porsche’s transaxle philosophy: balance, usability, and sharp dynamics and while it may not have the same iconic aura as the 911, it offers something arguably more important — the ability to enjoy Porsche engineering every day.
