Acquired from a Vide Grenier in Chalons en Champagne, this is an unusual framed travel poster jigsaw advertising PLM ( PARIS LYON MEDITERRANEAN) railway depicting Vichy as a destination.
The Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée ("Railway Company of Paris to Lyon and the Mediterranean"), also known as the Chemins de fer Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée or simply PLM, established in 1857, was one of France’s main railway companies until the nationalization of all French railways and establishment of the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF) on 1 January 1938.
Presumably a reproduction of the original poster which was painted by an artist variously known as H. TANCONVILLE (HENRI GANIER) & H. GRAY (HENRI BOULANGER) in the late 1800s.
The owner said she had owned the jigsaw for about 30 years and it has 1000 pieces (not counted but seems about right).
It was difficult to complete so they decided to have it framed.
A large, substantial, decorative piece sturdily framed, I think in oak, it will appeal to railwayana collectors, jigsaw enthusiasts, and francophiles in general…
In very good vintage condition with wear consistent with it’s age and use - please see examine photos carefully for condition.
Solid and sound with no structural damage.
This was dirty on acquisition and has since had a clean with the wood waxed.
The frame is in good condition.
I think it is glazed to the front in Perspex or similar but I’m not certain.
The poster jigsaw is complete and still bright.
It is marked with writing in several areas, some of which is slightly obscured by the frame edge - see photos.
The rear is sound and secure and has a hanging string.
