In 1575, Christopher Saxton received authorization from the Queen’s Privy Council to conduct a survey and create maps of England and Wales. By 1579, he had completed this task, resulting in the publication of his groundbreaking 'Atlas of England and Wales'. Among the maps included was the first-ever depiction of Somerset, showcasing its landscape and settlements. The map portrays various land features such as rivers, hills, and woodlands, labeled with their English names and sometimes supplemented with additional details, like the windmills atop the hills. Notably, Bristol dominates North Somerset, reflecting its significance, highlighted by Queen Elizabeth's recent visit. The map also features notable estates like Longleat and Castle Cary. An elaborate cartouche adorned with putti and bold colors contains the Latin county name and royal coat-of-arms, with another coat-of-arms of Saxton's patron, Thomas Seckford, displayed in the corner. Saxton's watermark, a bunch of grapes, authenticates the map as original, engraved by Leonard Terwoort, acknowledged alongside Saxton as the cartographer.
