Description

This is a finely detailed 1800s restrike of a 17th-century map titled ‘Plan de la Ville de Hesdin’, France.

The original map was created by Pierre Mortier, a renowned Dutch cartographer and publisher, and later engraved by Kupferstich von Beaulieu. This historical map captures the fortified town of Hesdin, a strategic military location in northern France, which was highly contested during the early modern period.

The map showcases Hesdin’s star-shaped fortifications, a hallmark of military engineering during the 17th century, designed to withstand artillery attacks. The carefully hand-colored engraving highlights defensive walls, bastions, moats, and surrounding terrain, including rivers, forests, and nearby settlements. A key in the lower right corner lists important landmarks within the fortified town, while a decorative title cartouche in the lower left corner enhances its aesthetic appeal.

This piece is an excellent example of antique cartography, appealing to collectors of historical maps, military history enthusiasts, and those interested in European fortifications. The intricate details and rich historical context make it a striking and informative display piece.
