Description

A distinguished and finely executed 18th-century etching depicting the renowned philologist and theologian David Millius.

This portrait was masterfully engraved by the celebrated Dutch engraver Jacobus Houbraken (1698–1780), one of the most prolific and skilled portrait engravers of the Dutch Golden Age, widely admired for his lifelike detail and exquisite line work. The original painting was by Jan Maurits Quinkhard (1688–1772), an accomplished Amsterdam portraitist known for his sensitive renderings of scholars, clergy, and notable figures of the Enlightenment period.

Houbraken’s crisp etching technique beautifully translates Quinkhard’s elegant depiction of Millius into a timeless portrait, capturing both the gravitas and intellectual presence of the sitter.

This piece is a fine example of the sophisticated portraiture and engraving craftsmanship that flourished in 18th-century Holland, highly desirable among collectors of antique academic and clerical prints.
