Description
I started making the pieces for this quilt when I was 11 years old.
Each individual piece was started by using a cardboard hexagon which I used to cut a hexagon from iron-on Vilene. These Vilene hexagons were then ironed onto pieces of cotton or polyester/cotton fabric. I cut the shapes out, turned them over and tacked the edges in place. When I had made several individual hexagon shapes, I arranged them into expanding hexagonal sections, before stitching them together by hand.
When I had made several sections, I arranged them into a larger pattern, and hand stitched them together.
Once I had the central section of hexagons, I worked around them in rows, working to complete the rectangle.
All of this was stitched COMPLETELY by hand.
Then I backed the patchwork piece onto a large piece of polyester/cotton, sandwiching polyester wadding in-between the two. The edges were then bound.
To make the 'quilting', I stitched through the layers at each point where the hexagons joined, overstitching the corners several times, leaving a small 'tuft' of thread on both sides.
I'd pick this up, then leave it for a while, but all-in-all, it took me 40 years to complete.
Since completion it has been wrapped and stored in a bedding box.
It is photographed on a king sized bed.
I have a second one in blues and whites which I started at the same time - that just needs quilting and wadding, and then edging. Maybe in another few years I might complete that one too!
I've always made things, for no other reason than I've enjoyed the process; I'm not one to sit doing nothing.
