LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH COPPER BACKPACK VINE SPRAYER, BERTHOUD BELLEVILLE L’EUROPEEN GARDEN PLANT SPRAYER, PULVERISATEUR, BRASS LETTERING, LEATHER STRAP, LANCE, 45cm tall 44cm long, 6.7kg - 1900s

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this from a Vide Grange (barn sale) at Bouilly in the Burgundy region and added it to our decorative French copper garden tool collection but this apparently originally came from a local vineyard.
It’s a large copper Berthoud backpack sprayer, or pulverisateur, which would have been used to spray vines, gardens or crops.
A big, heavy item, it has a curved backpack design with brass lettering, an iron pump handle and original leather straps and dates to the early 1900s.

A sturdy, imposing piece it is now worn but has an attractive patina and makes a great decorative gardening or wine collectible.
It’s also a superb display item, steampunk decorative, or even up-cycle to a lamp…

NOTE: Sold as a decorative collectible item - I don’t think this is working as a sprayer, the handle still pumps but doesn’t seem to produce any pressure, however it’s in good condition with staining, wear, scratches, dents and knocks consistent with it’s age and use but no damage - please examine photos carefully for condition.

This has just had a quick wash but I’m sure it would polish up well if so required.
Solid and sound with no structural damage.
The copper is thick and strong with years of wear and staining - see photos.
There are some brass fittings and brass lettering.
There is no hose but the original lance is still present.
The iron handle to one side is rusted and a little loose but sound and still pumps the pump.
The lid and interior sieve are present and sound.
There is a very worn but sound double leather strap, one side clipped in place the other hooks underneath the edge - see photos.
The bottom is worn and rusted but sound.
The interior pump and fittings are present and rusted but appear intact - see photos.

weighs about 6.7 kg.
