By W J C Lawrence, Curator, John Innes Horticultural institution, Merton, and J Newell, Assistant Curator, John Innes Horticultural Institution, Merton. Illustrated with black and white photographs and drawings. First published in 1939 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London. This revised second edition in 1941. Preface reads: This is not a book about all kinds of compost, but about two composts for all kinds of plants. These composts are the outcome of experiments to meet the practical needs of cultivation at the John Innes Horticultural Institution at Merton, England.’ Of interest to all keen gardeners.
2. CACTUS GROWING FOR BEGINNERS. By Vera Higgins and H T Marrable. First published in 1935 by Blandford Press Ltd, London. This reprinted second edition is dated 1952. ‘The authors hope that the simple instructions given here will direct the newcomer into sound methods of cultivation of such plants’.
