Description

The 1953 crown was the first UK commemorative coin issued during Queen Elizabeth II's reign but it was not issued into general circulation. As a result it is always highly sought-after by collectors and coin enthusiasts, both in the UK and internationally.
Designed by sculptor Gilbert Ledward, the crown features the Queen riding on horseback, which is very unusual for a United Kingdom coin. The edge inscription reads 'Faith and Truth I will Bear Unto You' which is taken from the Coronation Oath. The reverse features a crown in the centre of an emblematic cross formed from a thistle, rose, leek and shamrock.
Over the last 60 years, this has become one of the United Kingdom's most iconic coins, and has been the starting point for countless great collections.
Made to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, this five-shilling piece features an obverse design by the sculptor and engraver Gilbert Ledward RA. It features a portrait of Her Majesty mounted on her horse Winston, with The Queen dressed in her uniform as Colonel in Chief of the Grenadier Guards.
The reverse design features the four quarters of the Royal Arms, each depicted within a shield. In between each shield is one of the four emblems of the home nations – a rose, a thistle, a shamrock and a leek – ¬and in the centre of the design is a crown. Inscribed around the edge of the coin are the words ‘FAITH AND TRUTH I WILL BEAR UNTO YOU’, which were included in the pledge of allegiance made by His Royal Highness Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh to The Queen during the coronation ceremony.
This particular example has been briefly in circulation and bears marks accordingly. The case is also in used condition.
