Marian Mahler was born 1911 in Austrian. She trained at the Kuntgewerbeschule in Vienna from, then at the Royal State Academy. Some of her early designs were produced by the Wiener Werkstatte, a Viennese artistic community.
In 1937, she arrived in Britain working as a free-lance designer.
In the early 1950’s she produced many designs for Allan Walton Textiles, Edinburgh Weavers, Donald Brothers Ltd. and Helios, but most of her work was for David Whitehead's ‘Contemporary Prints’ range. By 1948 his company was directed by architect Dr John Murray, whose ambition was to make good designs available to the general public.
