Description
Its prototype was designed by Leo Fender in 1950 and the Precision was brought to market in 1951. It was the first electric bass guitar to earn widespread attention and use, and remains among the best-selling and most-imitated electric bass guitars.
In its standard, post-1957 configuration, this 1964 Precision Bass has a solid Alder body and a 20-fret maple neck with Rosewood veneer fretboard. The body has been stripped and refinished in a natural lacquer finish – by the amount of natural play wear it looks like this was probably done in the 1970s/1980s and gives the bass some real vintage mojo – we reckon this was probably a sunburst finish originally but bass players wanted to replicate the natural finished look of Precisions played by Geezer Butler, Sting and John Deacon to name but a few.
Refinish aside this pre-CBS bass is all original with the exception of both pots, and resistor, which have been changed at some point in the bass’s life. The original scratch plate has shrunk slightly (some difficulty taking it off and putting back on again) and is showing a little of the shielding plate underneath. It still has that unmistakeable Precision Bass sound and at only 3.25kg is one of the lightest vintage Precisions we have had in the shop. Comes complete with a cool teardrop shaped black alligator skin vinyl covered hard case.
