Ford Escort 1600 Sport - Needs Restored - Read Description

1979 Ford Escort 1600 Sport. This is a RHD Import from South Africa which has all tax and duty paid and is now fully UK registered. It does start and run but really needs pulled apart and restored properly. We have the V5 here which states 1600 Sport on it. There is evidence of previous accident damage which has not been repaired properly. Please dont look at the pictures and get starry eyed thinking it will be on the road in a couple of weekends as it needs a full restoration.

Body - Export spec sport shell with extra strengthening similar to our RS models. Car has evidence of previous front accident damage as the drivers side roof pillar is up a little and door gap at the top on drivers side is not right. You can see where the scuttle end has been repaired badly, which also needs looking at. The strut tops also look a bit too high , consistent with a previous hit at the front. Really this car needs pulled apart and put on a jig.Floors have been repaired on the outer sections front the chassis rail to sill and again done poorly. Both lower front and rear panels have been filled. Bonnet boot lid and doors are ok. Paint is ok but pretty irrelevant as by the time you do the work it will need mostly redone. Good front spoiler, quarter bumpers, new spotlights. Oh nearly forgot the sills have been put on by a blind welder and the gap between the sill and door bottoms is as straight as a roundabout.

Mechanics - Does start and run. Bit of a squealing noise from an external component such as alternator or water pump. We have not investigated it as this car has bigger issues to be dealt with first. 4 speed gearbox, sport back axle and running gear.

Interior - Seats have been recovered with the replica sport material now available in South Africa. These look quite good.Door cards are original but have speakers cut in. Dash top has been repaired. Headcloth is original and useable but not mint.

Wheels - Correct deep dish steels which have been refurbished, with good tyres.

Overall this car needs a lot of work, but for someone that has the tools and skills it might be viable. You are welcome to come and see it. We have a ramp so can marvel at the previous repairs and make you wallet start sweating. Delivery can be arranged if required. Please ask for a quote
