Exotic tropical Oleander plant for sale

Lower Earley, Berkshire

£12

Description

I have a rarely available Mediterranean Oleander plant for sale after dividing an original parent plant and potting on. The variety offered is Nerium Oleander simple pink Emilie. The flowers are unusually shaped like a turning propeller and have a radiant pink colour. Oleanders are widely grown throughout the Meditereanean, Florida, the Caribbean islands and other sub-tropical regions for their evergreen glossy foliage and profuse colourful flowers. In their native environments they thrive on poor quality soils with good drainage in full sun and tolerate erratic rainfall storing water in leaves and stems. My plant is 90 cm tall and growing strongly with two main shoots which will repeatedly divide in threes on production of flowers to eventually form a medium size bushy shrub. Oleanders are not frost hardy so need some protection during winter in the UK from the cold and wet. A large specimen near us has been successfully kept year round in a south facing porch showing what can be achieved in a good micro-climate. In general, Oleanders are best grown in large pots which can be placed in a sunny sheltered spot outdoors from May through September then brought under cover for winter in a cool place with good natural light where the minimum temperature does not fall below 5C. Ideal soil is slightly alkaline garden loam which is well drained such as John Innes No. 3 with added grit. Do not over-water especially in winter as their roots don't like sitting in constantly wet conditions. Like poinsettias, wear gloves if pruning to shape to avoid any contact of sap on the skin and do not consume any part of the plant. Asking a reasonable £12 for a long lived tropical exotic which I have not seen for sale in any local garden centre.
