Lovely vintage Kahla 'Madonna' porcelain tea set for 6 persons. Beautiful pearlescent finish with Classical theme coloured decoration and gold-coloured trim, made in the GDR (East Germany) by renowned manufacturer Kahla. Used but in very good condition. Consists of tea or coffee pot with lid, sugar bowl with lid, milk or cream jug, 6 tea or coffee cups with saucers and 6 side plates. In total, the set has 21 pieces (not counting lids separately). Each piece has the Kahla name and backstamp on the base, with 'Made in GDR'. I think that the mark was used in the period 1968 to 1987 and of course the GDR disappeared in 1990. The Kahla company or VEB Feinkeramik Kahlawas located in Thuringia, and included a number of factories - the original Kahla production site having been established in 1844.The decoration of the set has a Classical theme, with scalloped edges to the plates, pot, jug and bowl. The tea/coffee pot, sugar bowl, jug and side plates are decorated with printed images of female figures in Classical dress, in a bucolic background, with gold-coloured trim. The side plates include two variations on the theme image - each variation is used on 3 plates. The tea/coffee pot is 235 mm tall and 220 mm wide from handle to spout, weighing 800 g, marked '30' on the base. Sugar bowl is 110 mm tall and 155 mm wide handle to handle, weighing 300 g,marked '30' on the base. Milk jug is 110 mm tall and 120 mm wide handle to spout, weighing 220 g, marked '30' on the base. Cups are 55 mm tall and 115 mm wide including handle, weighing 100 g, and marked '18' on the base. One cup has a slightly different pattern of gold decoration, as shown in photos. Saucers are 150 mm diameter, weighing 150 g and marked '16' on the base ('26' in one case). Side plates are 195 mm diameter, weighing 225 g and marked '8' on the base. Condition: used, but in very good condition. One side plate has a crack, as shown in photos. Total weight of the set is about 4.2 kg.
