Born in 1839 & destined for the Ministry, James Osborn Spong ran away to London & found his niche in life as one of the Victorian eras greatest inventors. Between 1874 & 1887 he registered over 100 British & Foreign patents for gizmos ranging from revolving lamps, automatic boot cleaners, fire extinguishers & most successfully, grinders, mincers & slicers.
He revolutionised the Victorian kitchen where everything had been done by hand & his machines sold by the boat load! The best thing about Spong’s designs is how stylish yet practical they are & he was constantly adapting & improving them.
This is a Model 4 which has a great Victorian/Industrial look to it.
Cast iron with a steel table clamp and can be wall mounted. A lovely boxwood handle, it has spiral grooves in both conical grinding surfaces & can be adjusted to a certain extent using the rear pressure screw.
All surfaces except the mill wheels are finished in black, white & gold enamels.
It has cast marks of Spong & Co Ltd, No.4, Made in London, England.
