A batch of 500 Malting Kiln Tiles. The drying of malt in a kiln necessitated a surface on which the damp malt could be placed above a heat source so that it was dried evenly, given flavour, and the moisture content reduced to provide a good grain for grinding in the grist or malt mill in the brewing process.
These buff coloured glazed perforated kiln drying tiles have a large hole to the underside of the tile with a number of small holes on the top surface of the tile. The part of the tile with the small holes was relatively thin when compared with the thickness of the tile as a whole. This meant that more hot air reached the drying grain without letting the grain fall through the tile to the heat source below. The advantage of having them glazed meant that the Maltsters didn't need to water the floor, and it was easier to move the malt baskets around on the smooth surface.
This lovely batch would cover an area of 50 square metres and the perforated pattern that was once essential for the drying process would make for an attractive flooring option today.
