Description
Position: Support Worker
Location: N7, Islington London
Hours: Part-time (12 hours per week)
Days: Mondays (4-8pm), Fridays (6-10pm), & Saturdays (10:30am-2:30pm) additional support hours possible tbc.
About the Role
We are seeking a dynamic, fun, and outgoing Support Worker to assist a 19-year-old non-verbal young man with learning disabilities and autism. The ideal candidate will be a confident communicator who can adapt to the client’s unique engagement style, using alternative communication methods such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and visual aids.
A clean driving licence and minimum age requirement for insurance purposes of 25 years of age.
Key Responsibilities
Communication: Engage with the client using PECS, visual images, and clear, simple language. Adapt communication to the client’s style, ensuring they have enough time to process information and instructions. Empathy & Understanding: Be patient, empathetic, and responsive to the client’s cues. Show a deep understanding of the client’s needs and preferences. Social Stories: Use social stories to prepare the client for upcoming activities and transitions, ensuring a smooth experience. Transport: Safely transport the client to and from activities using the client's Motability vehicle.
Activity Support:
Saturdays: Transport the client to and from one-to-one and group dance movement psychotherapy sessions with Icandance in West Hampstead. The support worker will hand over the client to the dance practitioner and wait during the sessions.
Fridays: Accompany the client to a local disco for people with learning disabilities at Centre 404 on Camden Road. Provide support with personal care, toileting, and social interactions to ensure the client is safe and behaves appropriately.
Mondays: Provide at-home support after external activity from 4:00 PM 8:00 PM. Assist with bathing and preparing dinner, ensuring the client’s comfort and well-being.
Essential Qualifications & Skills
Proven experience working with non-verbal individuals with learning disabilities and autism. Strong understanding of PECS, visual communication tools, and social stories. Ability to use clear, simple language and provide time for the client to process information. Dynamic, fun, and outgoing personality with confidence in engaging the client. Kind, patient, and empathetic with a deep understanding of the client’s needs. A clean driving license and experience in driving larger vehicles. Ability to assist with personal care, including bathing and meal preparation.
Schedule
Mondays: 4-8pm (At-home support)
Fridays: 6-10pm (transport to and support at Local Disco at Centre 404)
Saturdays: 10am-2:30pm (transport to Icandance Sessions x 2 in West Hampstead).
