Description

Vintage First Edition 1956 The Winter Book For Girls Original Hardback Edited By Heather Burke. Very Good Used Condition.

Being offered for sale here is The Winter Book For Girls, which is highly collectable as it is a vintage original first edition from 1956 and not a modern facsimile. It is also a rare little gem as the hard covers are in a maroon colour whereas more commonly the covers of some copies of this publication are blue.

Throughout the 144 pages of this nostalgic, charming book are over 120 illustrations – black and white photographs, drawings and diagrams. It still retains its original pictorial coloured paper dust jacket.

Edited by Heather Burke, this entertaining book was described as the ideal book for long winter evenings and holidays. For the first time were gathered together a unique collection of winter pastimes for girls. There is a fascinating mixture of hobbies, sports, and things to do for any girl of around twelve and upwards. Each article was written by well-known specialists in their particular sphere and include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

Skating, puppetry as a hobby, growing your own winter plants, a career as a ballerina, party cooking, charm school, old time and ballroom dancing, youth clubs, becoming an Olympic trials rider, winter guiding, winter knitting, learning to swim and dive, etiquette, crafting various items, party games, how to re-style your bedroom, how to play table tennis, visiting museums and art galleries and learning to play badminton.

This book has been read and well looked after. Its binding remains firm and tight and its spine is in very good condition. There are no loose or missing pages, nor are there any rips or tears to them. The book is not marred by notes or highlighting, or colouring in, or prior owner inscriptions. There is a light yellow discolouration of the inside pages and some light marks, commensurate with their age. However, the text and illustrations are still bright and clear. The original paper dust jacket has various marks and signs of use on it, which is to be expected given this is a vintage item, and also has some tears to the paper; many years ago a small section of adhesive tape was attached to the front bottom left hand corner of the dust jacket in an attempt to repair one of the tears.

Please refer to the photograph provided to make your own assessment regarding the overall condition of this book.

It was published in England by the Burke Publishing Company Limited, London and printed by Western Printing Services Limited, Bristol, in 1956.

The size of this portrait format book is approximately 192 mm wide by 252 mm high.

This is a private sale from a pet and smoke free home.
