Description
First edition by Charles Reade and illustrated by Gordon Browne. W & R Chambers Ltd 1912.
The Cloister and the Hearth (1861) is a historical novel by the British author Charles Reade. Set in the 15th century, it relates the travels of a young scribe and illuminator, Gerard Eliassoen, through several European countries. The Cloister and the Hearth often describes the events, people and their practices in minute detail. Its main theme is the struggle between man's obligations to family and to Church.
Blue cloth with pictorial onlay on the upper cover and elaborate gilt lettering and decoration on the upper cover and spine. Top edge gilt.
Twenty colour illustrations and numerous line drawings by Gordon Browne. A good copy with some age and use showing but overall a good clean and bright version.
Originally published in 1861, this tale of the conflict between loyalty to church and family, is here beautifully illustrated by Gordon Browne, son of Hablot Brown [Phiz] who illustrated many of Dickens's novels.
