Description

ANTIQUE FRENCH CAST IRON BOOK PRESS, NOTAIRE, COPY, BINDING PRESS, PLATE SIZE 28x22cm cm opens to 6cm 20.8kg - 1900s - REDUCED!

WILL POST - I can post this for £20 if paid for by bank transfer (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

Part of our collection of antique printing items, we got this from a Brocante near Troyes in the Champagne region.
A sturdy book press dating to the early 1900s, often described as a Notaire’s press, they were used to bind or copy sheafs of legal documents. They were also used as printing presses, copy presses, nipping presses, paper presses or a book making press.
At nearly 21 kg it’s a big, heavy, well cast item that is worn but has a nice patina still showing attractive original green spatter paintwork.
Well used and now worn but still strong and sound it makes a great statement piece and also still works as it should.

In good antique working condition with wear and rust consistent with age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
This was quite dusty and has since had a light clean, oil and coat of clear wax.
It has an attractive patina with original paint showing - see photos.
The surfaces are worn with peeled paint and rust in areas but very sound - see photos.
No cracks or damage.
The handle is still strong and sound.
It opens and closes as it should do with large heavy fly press type rounded ends securing the plate tightly.
The plate wobbles a little but is secure at the fitting, closes firmly, and opens to about 6 cm.
The plate interior is in a reasonably smooth sound condition with some wear, rusting, and staining, as is the top of the base plate area - see photos.
The underside is rusted but strong and sound.
I can find no maker’s mark but one handle is marked 300.

Measures approximately:
Handle span 30 cm,
40 cm tall when fully open,
35 cm tall when closed,
Base 37 cm x 32 cm,
Plate size 28 cm x 22 cm,
Opens to about 6 cm,
Weighs about 20.8 kg
