Description
Elswick Hopper Safeway boys’ or small men’s bicycle - 21” frame - £60
This is a classic bike made in Barton-upon-Humber by the British company Elswick Hopper,. The gear hub is stamped “1976” - probably the overall year of manufacture.
It would probably best fit a child 11-15 or a small adult between 5’4” - 5’6” (163-168cm) according to various online bike sizing guides referencing frame size (here: 21 inches).
Typical of bicycles of its era, it’s a sturdy, reliable, and low-maintenance bike in good working order.
Features:
- 3-speed Sturmey Archer hub gears
- side pull brakes
- quill-stem handlebar
- All moving parts are greased/lubricated and move freely
- Brand-new, easy to use bottle dynamo and front dynamo light, and a reconditioned rear light.
- rear steel rack (not an original factory fitting) to attach panniers or a basket.
- Runs very smoothly and quietly (on a reasonable road surface, at least).
The present owner has had it for about 7 years, during which time it hasn’t been used a great deal.
The seat isn’t original and has some partial wear over which tape has been applied, and has plenty of life left in it.
The paint work has a few age-related chips and scuffs in places, and the chain guard has a few dents/deformations, but these don’t pose any problems to the rider.
Some dimensions:
• Frame size (centre of bottom bracket [crank spindle]) to top of seat tube): 53cm / 21in.
• Handlebar span: 52cm / 20.5in.
• Bicycle overall length (front wheel to rear wheel: 176cm/69in.
• Tyres: 26in.x 1 ⅜
• Weight: 2st 10lb / 17.2kg
Collection is from Begbroke, near Kidlington.
