With us here at RFH Classics we are pleased to offer this rare and early 1964 Austin Mini Cooper S 1071cc, a true icon of British motoring finished in striking Tartan Red with contrasting Red & Grey trim. This highly original example has come from long term ownership, having been cherished by its previous owner for 24 years during which it covered less than 500 miles. To confirm to a prospective buyer who ask about the 2nd fuel tank, this car is confirmed as a genuine MKI Cooper S and as such it would never have been fitted with the 2nd tank often associated marque as this wasn’t a feature until the 1275cc was introduced. Rarely do such well preserved Cooper S become available making this an exceptional opportunity to own a genuine piece of motoring history.

Developed in collaboration with John Cooper, the Cooper S took the Mini’s revolutionary design and transformed it into a rally winning machine. With its uprated 1071cc engine, improved brakes, and razor-sharp handling, the Cooper S dominated the 1960s rally scene, famously winning the Monte Carlo Rally three times. This very model, built in 1964, is from the same year the Cooper S secured its first Monte Carlo victory adding to its historical significance.

The 1071cc Cooper S was designed for competition purposes, offering 70bhp which was a significant upgrade over the standard 998cc Cooper’s 55bhp and quickly became a motorsport legend. Today, these early MK1 Cooper S models remain among the most sought after classic Minis.

Due to its low usage over the past 24 years the car comes with limited paperwork but it is accompanied a selection of old MOT tests, a letter from the Cooper S Register in 2001 confirming they had inspected the car and could confirm its originality including the two period features, namely the Motalita steering wheel and rev counter which remain fitted today. In this letter the author John Kelly confirms it was one of only 143 cars surviving that appeared on the register. Additionally, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust (BMIHT) certificate further verifies this to be a genuine home market 1071cc Cooper S that is still fitted with its original registration.

At one stage, a roll bar was fitted to the car, which has since been removed but is available to the new owner if required. As part of our preparation, the car will be supplied with a fresh MOT, even though it is MOT exempt, to ensure it is road ready. Interestingly, as a Historic Vehicle, it is also ULEZ exempt, now wouldn’t this be a fantastic way to navigate the city?
