Runs and drives
The Austin Victoria, produced between 1970 and 1974, was a small family saloon developed by the Spanish manufacturer Authi (Automóviles de Turismo Hispano-Ingleses), a subsidiary of British Leyland. Based on the front-wheel-drive Austin 1100/1300 platform but fitted with a unique Michelotti-designed saloon body, the Victoria was aimed at the Spanish market, where it offered a stylish alternative to the more utilitarian sedans of the era. It was available with 1.3-litre A-Series engines in various states of tune and was considered well-appointed for its class, with features such as wooden dashboard trim and comfortable interiors. Although it never achieved high production numbers, the Victoria is remembered today as one of the more unusual and elegant interpretations of the ADO16 family, combining British engineering with continental design flair.
We are pleased to offer this 1973 Austin Victoria De Luxe in beige with matching velour interior. This Victoria has been quite the traveller over the years. It was originally built in Spain in June 1973 and sold there but was bought by our vendor from Saarbrucken in Germany in 2022 and re-registered here in the UK. The all important Nova letter is supplied with the car. There isn’t a huge amount of history but we do have the Spanish vehicle inspection card stamped from 1987 to 2002. There also a small number of invoices since our vendor took custody. We did find online an extract from the German eBay ad saying it had “a complete technical overhaul some two years ago with brake pads, discs, all oils changed, as well as the tyres renewed, Hydrolastic suspension serviced and cylinder head gasket changed.”, however, there is no paperwork to back this up as correct.
The little Victoria is quite a handsome thing, the changes to the front and rear over an Austin 1300 giving it a Triumph-like look. Having spent most of its life in the warm, Spanish climate certainly hasn’t done it any harm and, whilst there are some age-related blemishes, it isn’t in bad shape for a 50 year old car. Come and take a look at a purpose-built facility in Cheshire and make your own mind up. The cabin is a nice place, with wooden steering wheel and gearknob and plush velour seats. Despite their pale colour, those seats are remarkably clean and free from any obvious damage. The Victoria’s dash is more modern than the contemporary Austin 1300 and well stocked with dials, although a couple more Smiths gauges have been added at some point for temperature and amps. There is some staining to the roof lining but that looks to be caused by glue rather than damp. The boot is massive for a small car, making this a very practical classic.
The car comes with V5C, import paperwork, vehicle inspection cards, invoices and a charming Victoria model.
Offered with no reserve, if you’re in the market for a super rare little saloon that will have folk scratching their heads at your local car meet, this Austin Victoria is hard to ignore.
