Description
A very rare hand painted antique stoneware coffee pot with a chicken head spout. Featuring bright colours on the flowers (peonies?) and crested birds with black foliage on an emerald green base (darker than the photos show). With kiln stilt marks on the base, scrolled handle and fluted white sections around the top and under the head.
Obviously it has lost its lid over time, but is also an amazing rare survivor of its time. No later than from around the middle of the 1800s, but could be from the 1700s due to its shape and popularity of animal headed spouts in that century. It of course has some wear - nibbles to the spout edge and top of the chicken's crest and to the underneath of the scroll just under the handle. Some paint flecks off especially to the right of the handle. Looks like some overpainting of darker yellow around the spout, but can't see or feel any cracks/damage here. Stands 16.5 cm tall. I have a matching creamer jug, but haven't located this yet.
