Description
Watercolor on paper. Surfing-in off Waikiki Beach with Diamond Head as a backdrop. Circa 1910s-30s. During the Roaring Twenties the World's elite found Honolulu to be a favorite getaway. This painting looks circa 1920 but was possibly painted as late as 1931 while Stone was traveling abroad acquiring the Vancouver museum's founding collection. Coincidentally, the museum's first purchase of Pacific Art was also beach related. That purchase was made in 1932, one year after Stone's initial buying trip, when they acquired On the Beach, Dinard, c. 1905 by J.W. Morrice (1865-1924). Measures about 16 1/2" by 12 1/2" to outside of what appears to be the original frame.
