Description
Extremely heavy (circa 15kg), very old solid bronze object, believed to be a rare piece of antique nautical apparatus.
The mystery object, came from an old collection, which included rare military and naval items, as well as unique industrial items, all of which have apparently been previously dispersed to other collections and a couple of museums.
The overall height of the object is 18 inches. The tapered bell shaped housing is 12 inches long, very heavily cast, with a lipped 8 inch diameter mouth, narrowing to a 2 inch diameter end piece. The smaller end piece has zig zag markings.
The 1/2 inch thick gauge bell like housing, has a small central hole in the centre of the smaller end.
The column is a 4 sided rectangular stem, 10.5 inches long, with each facet being 1.5 inches wide.
Each facet of the midriff fixed bracket is 3.5 inches square
The rotating footbase end fixing bracket is 4 inch square
The bell type structure has been fused to the the central column, so the only removable part is the square plate at the bottom, which has a hand made 2 inch diameter hexagonal bolt, screwed onto an inch diameter hand cut thread. It has the appearance of some type of very old resonating horn, but this is purely speculative, however, it has been suggested it could be an 18th or 19th century lighthouse,or old ship’s fog horn.
