Description

Moorcroft Millennium Dateline Series. New Zealand Aotearoa Vase by Emma Bossons. Shape 93/12.
To celebrate the new millennium, Moorcroft produced the Dateline Series which comprised six limited edition pieces designed by Emma Bossons and Nicola Slaney, inspired by their visit to the South Pacific. The Dateline Series was named Tahiti, Aotearoa, Fiji, Kiribati, Rarotonga and Birth of Light. The designs were inspired by and named after some of the places visited and those to see the first sunrise of the new millennium.

With images of New Zealand in her mind Emma worked up a striking orchid design on the 93/12 shape. Orchids have a mystique that sets them apart from other flowers. The orchid’s flowers are exotic, fragile, and graceful. They represent rare and delicate beauty with the colour pink symbolising pure affection, joy and happiness. Emma’s design displays this sense of magnificence, artful splendour and symbolic meaning. Soft pink orchid flowers nestled against a washed grey ground. At its base the woodsmoke grey is almost black but faded to a light grey towards the rim. The crown or lip of the top orchids are purple with a strong yellow centre and not just plain pink.
New Zealand would be one of the first countries on earth to see the millennium. Enquiries revealed that the Maori name for New Zealand was Aotearoa which translated as “the land of the long white cloud.” Emma’s orchid design inspired by New Zealand was chosen as part of the Dateline Series and Moorcroft gave her vase the Maori name Aotearoa.
The colours and impact of the 93/12 Aotearoa orchid vase are stunning and the design is perfect for this shape. The orchids pink, purple and yellow colours are bright and rich and have great appeal against the grey wash. The orchids are vibrant and merge and blend perfectly with each other and the consistent tube-lining and painting displays consummate skill.
This wonderful piece of Moorcroft, launched in 1999 to celebrate the Millennium in 2000 is one of Emma Bossons’s most celebrated designs. The 93/12 shape, often called the Edwardian Shape or Vase, features a rich design of orchids inspired from her visit to the South Pacific.
