Description

Large Antique Meiji Period Japanese Arita Porcelain Charger Plate Kajiwara Kiln 1868-1912

We are delighted to be able to offer this truly impressive 17.5” diameter blue & white porcelain charger. Hizen ware, from Arita in Japan, circa mid to late-19th century. This piece was made by Kajiwara Kikujiro the second Kiku son and/or Kajiwara Kikusaburo, the third Kiku son who died in 1883 of the Kajiware Family Kiln in Arita. It is hand decorated in an under-glaze blue in a classic Japanese composition that was popular in the Meiji Period (1868-1912). The charger displays a riot of auspicious elements, arranged in a harmonious manner. Anchoring the centre of the design is a parrot bird perched on the branch of a blooming cherry tree & its tail feathers trailing below. The trunk & the branches of the old cherry tree provide a special frame for the arrangement of peonies, foliage & large chrysanthemums flower heads. Other grasses & flowers swaying in the breeze & a lovebird in flight to the left adds more movement & drama. All set on a rolling landscape at the bottom, it completes the composition & adds visual contrast to the gnarled cherry tree trunk. The expert appointment of decorative elements & the different shade of the blue create a sophisticated & delicate detail that it appears realistic & three dimensional.

The border of this piece is richly decorated with Chinese inspired leaf & scroll intaglio motifs. On the back a simple cloud & flame design around the borders & tube line ring decoration around the un-glazed base edge rim. We cannot be certain that the charger was made by the hand of Kikujiro or Kikusaburo, but it’s very likely to have been a collaboration of the family members.

Reference: "The Kajiwara family, founded by an artist of that name, about 1680. — In later years the Kajiwara experts have been famous for the production of monster plaques. Kajiwara Kikujiro manufactured a plate four feet in diameter in 1866.

Book: JAPAN Its History Arts and Literature Volumn VIII Ceramic Art, by Frank Brinkley (1841-1912) , page 115.

This piece comes directly from a grand estate sale & is found to be in exceptional condition. No chips, no cracks, or repairs of any kind, & with a beautiful ring to the porcelain when tapped. It’s clear it’s a 19th century period example with one or two fire kiln iron spots, potter’s wheel ring striations, & a blue greyish gloss over glaze.

A rare & impressive collector example in superb condition . . .
