Raised rows of very fine raised gold enamel tiny dots or beads along each edge of the scroll pattern on the plate (Moriage ware technique).

Raised gilt scroll pattern around edge in between the gold beaded rows.

The decorative Moriage work creates a jewel-like shimmery effect. (see especially photo #7)

Black painted scroll pattern given in four places to highlight each of four groups of delicate, hand painted pink roses.

Light green and yellow hand painted detailed - abstract cloud -- accent pattern in four other places along edge.

Porcelain manufacturers and importers used a variety of symbols, letters or images to denote their
products. Called backstamps, these markings may be found on the bottom of a vase, on the back
of a plaque, or on the bottoms of utilitarian items such as bowls, plates, saucers or cups, etc.

There are approximately 140 Nippon-era (1891 to 1921) porcelain back stamps known to date.

Backstamp on this plate:

Hand Painted RC Nippon, in use since 1911 (1911 to 1921), used primarily on utilitarian items. The RC stands for either Royal China or Royal Crockery. There are several different RC marks but the red and green RC backstamp is more commonly found.

To create Nippon Moriage ware, an artisan applied raised enameled decorations to the surface of a Nippon porcelain piece. To achieve the Moriage effect, the artisan placed very fine dots close together, similar to piping icing onto a birthday cake. Jeweled effects are part of many Moriage pieces.

Collection from CB1 1LH (centre Cambridge) or CB21 (Fulbourn).
