Description
VINTAGE 1860 ANTIQUE CLAY PIPE, AN ORIGINAL SOUVENIR MADE TO COMMEMORATE THE APRIL 1860 BARE-KNUCKLE ‘FIGHT OF THE CENTURY’ BOXING MATCH BETWEEN TOM SAYERS (UK) AND JOHN C HEENAN (USA). One side of the bowl depicts Tom Sayer in a boxing stance within a ring with the opposite side depicting J C Heenan also with raised fists and standing in a boxing ring. The pair fought the first international boxing championship at an outdoor ring near Farnborough, Hants. This historic event took place on the morning of April 17th 1860. While the event was illegal, sporting historians accept that this fight was the beginning of World Title fights. The match lasted two hours and 27 minutes ending in a draw after 42 rounds with the police storming the ring. Pipe has the word Scotland on one side of the stem. Length 11.5 cm. In excellent condition, see photos. No chips or cracks. Sold as seen. From a pet and smoke-free home. (NB: If the item is shown on Gumtree it is still available. No need to ask.
