Description
Antique Victorian, late 19th century, cast iron fire back.
Stamped on the back “T. Elsley Ltd, London”. Thomas Elsley was a British manufacturer of decorative cast iron works. He was active from around 1882 to 1916 and his company was located at Portland Metal Works in London. Elsley's firm was known for producing much of C.F.A. Voysey's metalwork.
The fire back has been restored, media blasting the front to remove decades of soot and paint, to bring back the detail of the casting, and then refinished with two coats of traditional grate polish buffed to a soft graphite sheen.
The scene depicts Hercules (Heracles) and the Nemean Lion, one of the mythical beasts killed by Hercules in his 12 labours.
There are three open fixing holes at the top and four more at the bottom that could be drilled out if desired to enable secure wall mounting.
This would be a striking addition to any fireplace, modern or traditional.
Dimensions 61cm x 40cm approximately.
This is exceptionally heavy for its size @ nearly 25kg.
