Description

ANTIQUE FRENCH SILVER PLATE JEWELLERY BOX, TRINKET BOX, BOÎTE À BIJOUX, LA LEÇON DE FLÛTE, HALLMARKED B W, JEAN BASTIDE & BERNARD WICKER, 13.5x9.5x5cm - 1800s - REDUCED!

WILL POST - I can post this for £4.50 if paid for by bank transfer. (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this box at an antique dealer at Reims in the Champagne region.

I’m advised dating to the late 1800s, it’s a silver plated jewellery box with an engraved image to the lid of a young couple in a country scene titled: LA LEÇON DE FLÛTE (THE FLUTE LESSON).

It’s hallmarked to the base with a mark B W either side of a building/tower.
Brief research shows this to be the mark of a collaboration between Parisian gold/silversmith Jean Bastide and engraver Bernard Wicker (the building in the mark I think represents a bastide building) - I’m no expert on silver however so I’m happy to be corrected.

A quality piece lined in red fabric, it is now worn with some of the usual black tarnishing from the silver content and some base copper showing but is still sound, bright, attractive and functional.

In good antique condition with wear and staining commensurate with age and use, please examine the photographs carefully for condition.
Solid and sound with no damage.
All surfaces are in good condition but with wear and staining - see photos.
The engraved image to the top is well defined and bright, as is the writing and trim.
There is base copper showing through.
All surfaces have some black tarnishing to a greater of lesser extent - see photos.
The lid opens and close as it should with the catch working well and the hinge strong.
The underside of the lid has some sticky tape remains.
The interior is lined in worn and faded red baize type fabric.
The base is hallmarked as described above.

Measures approximately:
13.5 cm long,
9.5 cm wide,
5 cm tall,
Weighs about 493 g in total.
