LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH GRAPE HARVESTING BASKET, CHAMPAGNE GRAPE PANIER DE VENDANGES, 87x57cm - 1900s - REDUCED!

Acquired from a vide maison in Polisot in the Champagne region this is an original Champagne grape pickers basket dating to the early 1900s, possibly earlier.
Typical of the baskets used in this region, it is strongly constructed with sleds to the underside and would have been used to load and carry grapes.
This has seen a hard life as a work tool and latterly it has been an exterior decorative item on a covered terrace.
As a result it is now worn, has numerous pulls and missing pieces, and has many signs of old woodworm (which I have treated).
That said it is still solid and sound and makes a great log basket, laundry basket, planter, florist display, prop, or decorative display piece…
In antique vintage condition with wear, woodworm, pulls, and knocks - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
The photos best show the condition of this.
Very worn but still robust.
Slightly misshapen but with only a little flex to it.
There is old woodworm which I have just treated, the buyer may wish to do so on receipt - see photos.
There are numerous missing bits of basket, pulls, and splits, along with flaking pieces which are still dropping a little in places - see photos.
The edges are bound in wire which is rusted but secure and strong.
The original wooden sleds to the underside are present and secure although one is a little loose.
I can find no maker’s mark.

87 cm long handle to handle, 82 cm edge to edge,
57 cm wide,
26 cm tall to handle top, 21 cm to basket edge,
Weighs about 4.5 kg
