WILL POST - I can post this for £7.99 if paid for by bank transfer (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).
Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!
Part of our collection of French copper kitchenalia, we got this from an antique dealer in Chatillon sur Seine, Burgundy, and have used as a planter alternating between a hanging jardiniere and a freestanding planter.
It’s actually a sturdy antique French copper fish kettle or poissoniere which has developed an impressive aged patina.
According to the dealer it’s an early 19th Century pan originally from a French manoir kitchen, circa 1910.
It is artisan hand crafted with bronze handle brackets, copper rivets, cramp seams (a cramp seam is the join of the sheets of copper where it is sort of dovetailed together), and a forged iron handle that would have been bespoke made.
Attractively worn and no longer watertight but with a nice patina it is now probably destined to be a planter or piece of decorative French copper kitchenalia…
In good antique condition with staining, wear, scratches, dents and knocks consistent with its age and use - please examine photos carefully for condition.
This has just had a thorough wash - I’m sure it would polish up well if so required.
Solid and sound with no structural damage but does have wear and staining - see photos.
NOTE: this is no longer watertight. Whilst I can see no obvious holes I have filled this with water and found it leaks slowly from small split at the bottom edge to one end.
The copper is heavy, thick and strong but with staining, tarnishing, and wear.
The copper has a slightly hammered or martele finish.
The upper edges are rolled over an iron frame and are very sound.
The cramps seams to either end are brass soldered and intact.
The base is flat and worn but sound.
The interior would have originally been tin lined but it’s now very worn and stained but sound.
The iron handle is rusted with a little flaking rust but is sound and easily strong enough to lift the planter when full - see photos.
The handle joint brackets are made from worn bronze, copper riveted and very secure.
The joints are very sound with no movement.
I can find no maker’s marks.
Approximate dimensions:
58 cm long handle bracket end to handle end,
54 cm long to the pan exterior edge,
16 cm wide,
11 cm tall to the top edge,
25 cm tall to the top of the handle,
weighs about 4 kg.
