Acquired at a vide maison in Chepy in the Champagne region, this is a genuine antique and had been in the owner’s family for many years, initially used for cooking, at sometime as a champagne ice bucket, and latterly as an inglenook fire accessory and log or kindling bucket.

It is a large hand made hammered, or martelé, tin lined, copper cauldron with a lid which fits well but does not appear to be original to the pan.

It is distinctive in it’s bell shape, known in French as a chaudron cloche, with it’s flat bottom and low centre of gravity reducing the risk of tipping over when lifted from the fire.
A local antique dealer advised it’s original purpose was as a cooking pot over an open fire and dates the pan to the late 1800s, the lid being a later addition.

Nicely aged and still watertight, it now makes a great decorative piece of French kitchenalia with many potential purposes such as: fireside accessory, log/kindling bucket, planter, champagne/ice bucket, sink…

In good antique condition with staining, wear, scratches, dents and knocks consistent with it’s age and use but no damage - please examine photos carefully for condition.

This was in quite a dirty condition and has since had a wash, I’m sure it would polish up if so required.

Solid and sound with no structural damage.

The copper is thick and strong.

The surface has a hammered, or martelé, finish and has several scratches and dents - see photos.

The interior has a worn tin lining as does the lid underside.

The upper edge has a strong rolled rim.

The bottom is flat and worn but sound.

Still watertight.

There are no holes and no light is visible when it is upturned.

The lid fits reasonably well but not tightly, sitting on top if a sill to the inner edge of the rim.

It has a sound handle with copper rivets.

It is misshapen from use but still fits.

I can find no maker’s mark.

Approximate dimensions:
35 cm diameter maximum,
29 cm diameter to the outer edge of the top,
26 cm tall to the pan edge,
35 cm tall to the top of the lid handle,
weighs about 3.2 kg.

The wine bottle is for display and to show scale and not included!
