Description

ANTIQUE FRENCH COFFEE BEAN ROASTER, DENIS PARIS TORREFACTOR, COFFEE CHESTNUT ROASTER, 17cm diameter 12cm tall - 1900s FRENCH KITCHENALIA - REDUCED!

WILL POST - I can post this for £6 if paid for by bank transfer (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this from a brocante at Saint-Quentin in the Aisne region and have used it as a decorative kitchenalia item but it apparently came from the clearance of a local café.

It’s a compact domestic or portable antique steel coffee bean roaster, or torrefactor, dating to the early 1900s, which is still in good sound condition.

There is a circular metal base which would have been stood over a fire/heat source and a tombola style turning barrel which would have contained the coffee beans. They would then have been manually turned over the heat for roasting.
They were also used as chestnut roasters.

Quite lightweight but a good quality piece marked with a copper riveted maker’s mark plaque:

DENIS PARIS
MARQUE D

Now worn but still sound, it’s a highly collectable kitchenalia piece that would also probably be possible to use it for it’s intended purpose…

In good condition with wear, surface rust, and knocks, but no damage - please examine the photographs for condition.

It was dirty and has had a thorough wash resulting in a clean, sound, surface with an attractive antique patina and no loose rust.
If not to the buyer’s taste I’m sure it would paint up nicely.
There is rust but no serious corrosion or perforation to the surfaces and it appears robust enough to use as a roaster although we have never done so.
The base is sound with only a little flex to it.
The two handles are sound.
The barrel slots into the base and is separated in a push-fit manner.
The interior is reasonably clean with some surface rust and staining - see photos.
The turning handle is sound and functions, rotating well.
The wooden handles have signs of old woodworm but are sound and I have dip treated them with woodworm treatment.
Marked with a maker’s mark as described.

Measures approximately:
12 cm tall,
17 cm diameter,
22 cm long handle to handle,
9.5 cm drum barrel diameter,
13 cm long barrel length,
33 cm long wooden handle to handle,
Weighs about 600 g.
