Description
My name is Dan. I have 30 years teaching experience and 20 years tuition and CCEA examiner experience. Despite having retired from full-time teaching , I treat tuition as a full-time activity where I am available to provide complete wrap around support to the student and regular feedback and advice to the parent. I tutor biology and physics at GCSE and biology at AS/A2 level. Once tuition is under way, my students immediately show an uplift in confidence and their class tests and assessment results improve significantly. Alongside the tuition, I also supply my own precisely written and easily understood notes for each topic. A level students especially, comment on how helpful these notes are to their understanding of the subject.
I work hard to address two main issues with respect to exam success......the amount of work the student is actually doing on an ongoing basis......and their written exam technique. To this end, I also supply booklets of past paper Qs. Student are encouraged to go through these Qs in preparation for the tuition session. This allows the tuition session to be targeted towards areas where the student is having the greatest difficulty.
My experience has been that science students , even at GCSE and A level , are not often set written homeworks...and even less often is their work marked with meaningful feedback given. This leaves students unsure of the quality of their responses and parents with insufficient guidance on their child's progress. To this end...once tuition is underway, I invite the student to complete set written work and return this to me. I would correct and return the work and give extensive feedback to both student and parent. This is an approach which I have used for several years. In many cases it has proved to be the most effective tool in my arsenal as a tutor.
Typically, I see each student every second week, but every week is possible as the exams approach. Tuition can be face to face, but I am now well established in online tuition. Once the student has been sent my resources, online tuition is equally effective. The majority of my work is from parent recommendations. At the moment I have tuition times available each weekday and on Saturdays. I charge £32 for GCSE and £35 at AS/A2 level.
The following is directed to A level students who are needing to resit AS modules in June 26. Each AS module contains 6 topics and all topics will need to be revisited for the resit .
I can provide tuition for these modules as required . Alternatively, if the student feels that they do not need tuition for these topics, I can do as follows.....
I can provide the student with a set of clear summarized notes and a set of past paper Qs for one topic at a time.....the student can complete the Qs and return them to me for marking. I will then return the work and give extensive feedback to the student. This is an approach I have already used with students and it has proved to be very effective . It is the best way of ensuring that the student has covered all of the topics and that their exam technique is sharpened. This approach allows the A2 student to prepare for AS resits while giving their main attention to their A2 work.
For the provision of all the materials and the marking/annotation of each topic I will charge £35 per topic or £200 for each complete module. For June 26 resits, students should be starting preparation in this term. Dan
