If your wipers are making noise when wiping, the most common causes are worn blades, a dirty windscreen, or incorrect blade alignment. Worn rubber on the blades can cause squeaking or chattering, while debris on the glass or blades creates friction. Misaligned wipers may not sit flush with the windscreen, leading to uneven pressure and noise.

To fix the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the windscreen thoroughly with glass cleaner to remove dirt, wax, or residue.
  2. Inspect the wiper blades for cracks, splits, or hardening rubber. Replace them if necessary – most blades last 6-12 months.
  3. Check the wiper arm tension. If too loose or bent, it may not apply even pressure.
  4. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to the blades to remove built-up grime.
  5. For persistent noise, try a windscreen treatment like Rain-X to improve smoothness.

If the problem continues, the wiper motor or linkage may be faulty, requiring professional inspection. Regular maintenance, such as lifting wipers in frosty conditions, can extend their lifespan.

From a mechanic’s perspective, wiper noise often stems from poor blade-to-glass contact. The rubber degrades over time, losing flexibility. Cold weather accelerates wear, making blades stiff and noisy. A quick fix is to wipe the blades with white vinegar to remove debris. If that fails, replacement is the best solution – Bosch or Michelin blades are reliable choices. Avoid cheap alternatives, as they wear faster and may not fit correctly.

Reasons for the wiper causing squeaking noise on the glass:

  1. Foreign objects on the wiper. If there are foreign objects between the wiper blade and the windshield, it will not only produce squeaking noises when wiping but also significantly affect the wiping effect, posing a potential safety hazard;

Solution: Therefore, after passing through rough road conditions, it is best to check the wiper for any foreign objects. If present, clean them promptly;

  1. Quality of the wiper. Poor-quality wipers often have rubber components with inadequate resistance. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can easily cause hardening (roughness), leading to squeaking noises during operation;

Solution: Use sandpaper to smooth it out;

  1. Wiper angle. An incorrect angle can cause the wiper blade to jump on the windshield, resulting in abnormal noise;

Solution: The owner can simply adjust the angle. However, the downward pressure of the wiper should not be too strong, as it may accelerate glass wear.

Wiper Arm Adjustment Tutorial

  1. Tools needed: Flat-head screwdriver, two adjustable wrenches (one for fixing, one for adjusting, or pliers as an alternative);
  2. Lift the wiper along the angle of the glass, then raise the wiper arm outward. (Note: Some models may damage the wiper arm if lifted directly. Different car models have varying methods to enter maintenance mode, so specific analysis is required);
  3. Remove the wiper blade to prevent accidental damage during adjustment. Place a towel over the wiper arm to avoid scratching the paint;
  4. Use one wrench to fix the elbow and another to gently twist in different directions. If the wiper jumps when lifting upward, adjust the elbow tip counterclockwise. If it jumps when wiping downward, twist clockwise. Be mindful of the force to avoid damaging or breaking the wiper arm.
