Which button to press when the car fogs up?

A mechanic’s perspective: Fogging happens when warm, moist air hits a cold windscreen. The fix is simple—use the demist button (look for the windscreen icon) and ensure the A/C is running. The A/C removes moisture, even if you set the heat to warm. If fogging persists, inspect the cabin air filter—a clogged filter reduces airflow and dehumidifying efficiency. Also, check for coolant leaks, as low levels can weaken the heater’s defogging power.

Press the air conditioning cooling button or the front windshield defogging button when the car fogs up. The fog inside the car windows forms because the temperature inside the car is higher than the outdoor temperature, leading to condensation.

There are two defogging buttons in a car. One is for the front windshield defogging, marked by a fan shape with three upward wavy lines inside. The other is for the rear windshield defogging, marked by a rectangle with three upward wavy lines inside.

The quickest way to defog the car on a rainy day is to turn on the front windshield defogging mode, then switch on the air conditioning cooling (A/C) and set the temperature to the lowest. The fog will clear up quickly. For automatic air conditioning, simply press the one-touch defrost button, and the rest will be handled automatically. Alternatively, you can use the heating system to defog, which is also effective but takes a few minutes to work.

When your car’s windscreen fogs up, press the demist button—usually marked with a windscreen and wavy lines symbol—to activate the air conditioning and direct airflow to the windscreen. Most modern cars also automatically engage the A/C and adjust fan speed when this button is pressed.

For quick defogging:

  1. Turn on the demist function (front and rear if available).
  2. Set the climate control to a warm temperature—this helps evaporate moisture.
  3. Ensure the A/C is on, as it dehumidifies the air.
  4. Crack a window slightly to balance humidity levels if needed.

In older cars without automatic climate control, manually select the windscreen vent setting, turn the fan to high, and activate the A/C. Electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf or Tesla Model 3 often have pre-conditioning features to prevent fogging remotely. Persistent fogging may indicate a faulty cabin filter or excess moisture inside—check for leaks or wet floor mats.
