Car chargers are available at major e-commerce platforms and offline automotive accessory brand stores. A car charger converts the 12-volt power from a vehicle's cigarette lighter socket into 5-volt USB voltage to charge electronic devices via charging cables.

Precautions for using car chargers:

  1. Do not insert the car charger or connect it to your mobile device before starting the vehicle, as unstable voltage during ignition may damage both the charger and phone.
  2. When the car charger becomes dirty after prolonged use, never clean it with harsh chemicals, detergents or strong cleaning agents. Simply wipe with damp tissue and air dry to avoid damage.
  3. Avoid dropping, knocking or shaking the charger during use. In summer when vehicle interiors exceed 45°C due to sun exposure, temporarily discontinue charger use to prevent serious damage to the internal circuitry.
  4. As an electronic device, the car charger should not be kept in humid environments for extended periods to prevent corrosion or oxidation of internal components. If liquid is spilled on the charger while driving, immediately remove and dry it to avoid circuit board damage.
  5. After turning off the engine, unplug and store the car charger. Leaving it connected to the power outlet long-term may cause corrosion at the contact points that's difficult to remove. While cigarette lighter sockets in 80% of vehicles cut power when the key is removed, some models maintain continuous power supply.

From an EV owner’s perspective:

  1. Manufacturer dealerships (e.g., Tesla, BMW iX) for OEM chargers with warranty support.
  2. Dedicated EV charging suppliers like Pod Point or BP Pulse for home wallbox installations.
  3. Online marketplaces (Amazon, eBay) for portable chargers, but verify compatibility with your EV’s connector type.

Avoid cheap, uncertified chargers—safety risks outweigh savings.

The best places to buy car chargers include online retailers, specialist automotive stores, and electronics shops. Online options like Amazon, Halfords, and Argos offer a wide selection, often with competitive pricing and next-day delivery. Specialist automotive retailers such as Euro Car Parts or Halfords provide expert advice and branded chargers compatible with specific models. For electric vehicle (EV) owners, manufacturers like Tesla or Nissan often sell dedicated chargers through their official websites or dealerships.

When choosing a car charger, consider compatibility with your vehicle (e.g., USB-C for modern cars, 12V sockets for older models), charging speed (measured in amps or watts), and safety certifications like CE or UKCA. For EVs, check whether you need a Type 1 or Type 2 connector, and whether a home wallbox charger (like those from Pod Point or BP Pulse) is more suitable than a portable unit.

Budget options start around £10 for basic USB adapters, while high-speed or smart chargers can exceed £100. Always read reviews to ensure reliability, especially for off-brand products.
