From a safety perspective, BMW positions fog lights to maximise visibility without causing glare. The front fog lights sit low in the bumper to cut under mist, while the rear is on the left to align with traffic flow. Always use them sparingly—rear fog lights can obscure brake lights if overused. Check your manual for model-specific variations, especially with LED setups in newer 5 Series models.

The front and rear fog lights on the BMW 5 Series are located in specific positions for optimal visibility. The front fog lights are integrated into the lower bumper area, typically near the outer edges. The rear fog light is housed within the main rear light cluster, usually on the left side (driver's side) to comply with road regulations.

To activate them:

  1. Start the car and ensure the ignition is on.
  2. Locate the lighting control stalk on the left side of the steering column.
  3. Turn the outer ring to the position marked with the fog light symbol (front or rear).
  4. Press the button or toggle the stalk to switch them on.

Front fog lights improve visibility in poor weather, while the rear fog light is brighter than standard tail lights to alert following drivers. Note that using rear fog lights unnecessarily can dazzle other motorists, so switch them off when conditions improve.

For exact placement, refer to your owner’s manual or inspect the lower front bumper (front fog lights) and the left rear light cluster (rear fog light). Models like the G30 5 Series (2017–present) have sleek LED designs, making them less obvious when off.

The fog lights on the BMW 5 Series are installed at the front and rear of the vehicle. The fog light switch is located next to the light knob and can be activated with a simple press.

Fog lights are used to illuminate the road and provide safety warnings during rainy or foggy weather conditions. Some models feature a rain and fog mode for the headlights.

In foggy conditions where visibility is low and the driver's line of sight is limited, fog lights can extend the visible distance. Particularly, yellow anti-fog lights have strong light penetration, enhancing visibility for both the driver and other road users.

Fog lights can be categorized into front and rear fog lights, each serving different purposes. Front fog lights can cut through dense fog to alert oncoming drivers, while rear fog lights make the vehicle more noticeable to drivers behind in low-visibility conditions such as fog, snow, rain, or dust.

Fog lights should only be activated when visibility drops below 200 meters. In such situations, standard headlights, width lights, and taillights are insufficient for adequate illumination and warning, necessitating the supplementary use of fog lights.
