What to Do When Your Vehicle Breaks Down in Water on a Rainy Day?

If your vehicle breaks down in water during heavy rain, prioritise safety and follow these steps to minimise risks. First, stay calm and assess the water level. If it’s above the bottom of the doors, do not attempt to restart the engine to avoid hydrolock (water entering the engine, causing severe damage). Turn on hazard lights and exit the vehicle if safe. Move to higher ground and call for roadside assistance.

  1. Avoid restarting the engine if submerged. Water in the combustion chamber can destroy the engine.
  2. If safe, push the car to shallow water or the roadside to prevent obstruction.
  3. Contact your breakdown provider or emergency services. Many policies, like those from the AA or RAC, cover water-related incidents.
  4. After recovery, have a mechanic inspect the electrical systems, brakes, and fluids. Water damage can corrode components over time.

Modern cars like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Corsa have sealed electronics, but deep water can still compromise systems. If you frequently drive in flood-prone areas, consider waterproofing treatments or a higher-riding vehicle like an SUV.

From a mechanic’s perspective, water damage requires immediate attention. Even if the car starts after a breakdown in water, unseen issues like contaminated oil or corroded wiring may arise. Have a professional drain and replace fluids, check the air intake, and inspect the ECU. Ignoring this can lead to costly repairs later.

If your vehicle breaks down in water on a rainy day, do not attempt to forcibly start the car. Instead, quickly push the vehicle to a safe location, ensuring the front is higher than the rear. This allows water in the exhaust pipe to drain out, preventing damage to components such as the catalytic converter and muffler. Remove the negative terminal of the battery as soon as possible to avoid short circuits in the vehicle's electrical systems due to water exposure, and seek immediate assistance from a professional auto repair technician. The most critical mistake to avoid is forcibly restarting the engine after stalling, as this can lead to severe engine damage ("hydrolock"), and insurance companies typically will not cover such incidents. When driving through water, maintain a low speed (using a low gear) and high throttle to keep the vehicle moving steadily in a straight line without shifting gears. Additionally, avoid multiple vehicles crossing simultaneously; instead, proceed one by one, and do not follow or drive alongside large vehicles. If you feel a loss of power while wading, quickly depress the clutch and rev the engine several times to increase RPM, ensuring continuous exhaust gas pressure to prevent water from entering the exhaust pipe and causing the engine to stall.
