The voltage of a battery is generally 12V or 24V. Typically, the battery voltage for gasoline-powered cars is 12V. Multi-cylinder diesel engines and single-cylinder diesel engines above 25 horsepower usually use a 24V battery voltage (two batteries of the same capacity connected in parallel). As for diesel engines, only Iveco still insists on using a 12V battery. The circuit operating voltage is 12V.

Under abnormal circumstances, if the voltage is lower than this, it may be difficult to start. After starting, since the generator begins to generate electricity, the voltage for a 12V system should be between 13.5V and 14.5V.

Within the normal range, the car voltage is between 12V and 15V. During startup, as long as it is not lower than 11V, it is considered normal. Regular maintenance of the generator is recommended, and it is also advisable to recharge the battery (remove it and take it to a professional battery charging station), which will help extend the battery's lifespan.

From an EV engineer’s perspective, battery voltage is critical for performance. Most modern electric cars operate between 350V and 800V. Higher voltages, like those in the Porsche Taycan (800V), allow faster charging and better efficiency. Lower-voltage systems, such as older hybrids, may use 200V. The trend is toward higher voltages to reduce charging times and improve range.

The voltage of a car battery depends on the type of vehicle. Most conventional petrol and diesel cars use a 12-volt battery, which is standard for starting the engine and powering electrical systems. Electric vehicles (EVs), such as the Tesla Model 3 or Nissan Leaf, use high-voltage battery packs, typically ranging from 350 to 800 volts, to power the electric motor and support fast charging.

For traditional 12-volt batteries:

  1. They provide enough power to start the engine and run accessories like lights and infotainment.
  2. Voltage can drop to around 11-12V when the engine is off but should read 13.7-14.7V when the alternator is charging.

For EV batteries:

  1. Higher voltage improves efficiency and reduces energy loss during charging.
  2. Fast-charging stations (like those for the BMW iX) rely on high-voltage systems to deliver rapid power.

If you're checking your battery, use a multimeter for accuracy. A reading below 12V in a conventional battery may indicate it needs recharging or replacing.
