Lexus was initially launched in North America, as the pronunciation of 'Lexus' in English resembles the word 'Luxury', evoking an impression of it being a premium automobile. The Lexus logo features an uppercase 'L' from the name 'Lexus', enclosed within an ellipse. The ellipse symbolises the globe, representing Lexus vehicles' worldwide presence.

In 1987, Molly Sanders, head of Molly Designs, spent three months meticulously crafting this distinctive ellipse and 'L', replacing the previously favoured version which featured an 'L' without encircling ellipse, resembling a seagull's wing.
