The N gear is commonly known as neutral gear, which usually refers to the state where the gear lever of a motor vehicle is not placed in any forward or reverse gear, and the transmission is completely separated from the drive wheels. The neutral gear in a manual transmission is in the middle position, while the neutral gear in an automatic transmission is marked with an N.

The neutral gear N is equivalent to the neutral gear in a manual transmission and can be used when starting or towing. When waiting for a signal or in traffic jams, the gear selector is often kept in the D position while the brake is pressed. If the stop is very short, this is acceptable, but if the stop is prolonged, it is best to shift to the N position and engage the parking brake.

The N gear in an automatic transmission stands for Neutral. It disengages the transmission from the engine, allowing the wheels to spin freely without power. Unlike Park (P), which locks the transmission, Neutral is useful when towing or pushing the car, or if the engine needs to run without moving (e.g., at a car wash).

Key differences between Neutral and Park:

  1. Neutral disconnects the engine from the wheels but doesn’t lock them. Park engages a parking pawl to prevent movement.
  2. Use Neutral for short stops (e.g., traffic lights) only if necessary, as leaving it in Drive (D) with the brake applied is safer.
  3. Never shift to Neutral while driving unless absolutely required, as it reduces control.

Neutral is often misunderstood. Some drivers mistakenly use it to coast downhill, thinking it saves fuel, but modern automatic transmissions are more efficient in Drive. In electric or hybrid cars like the Nissan Leaf or Tesla Model 3, shifting to Neutral may disable regenerative braking, reducing efficiency.

If your car has an electronic parking brake, always engage it before shifting to Park to avoid stressing the transmission’s parking pawl. Neutral is primarily a functional gear for specific scenarios, not everyday use.
